Gay Bashings On The Rise?

There's a rather important story floating around over the past day or two about a new FBI report concerning hate crimes. The report states that although hate crime, on the whole, is slightly down, hate crimes against LGBT persons are up. By 6%. Which is kind of significant.

I started thinking about it, and I have to wonder why? What has happened over the last year that has caused increased aggresion against gay people? Is it the newly found marriage rights in California and Connecticut? Is it the increased exposure of gays in a, you know, positive light? Is it that gay people are not as ashamed as they were a year ago about themselves so they are more likely to report an assualt as a hate crime rather than pretend it was a random mugging? Is it the ever increasing fury of the Crazy Christian Scare Bears of the world that continue to imbue their ilk with utter hatred and intolerance to us?

Probably all of the above and more. Whatever the reason, it sucks.

Be careful. That said, never, NEVER stop being who you are. Don't be scared of what might be, because (as someone very smart pointed out to me) if you continue to believe it will happen, you will make it happen. Don't hide in hopes that you won't be next. We never can know what is going to happen to us, which is exactly why we need to live our lives free, open and real. Retreating will only empower the fuckers in this world that think it's ok to attack us because of who we are.
