Could Be My Gayest Act Ever

Following in Derfner's footsteps, I decided that I should do some overtly gay things. Aside from the obvious. So I joined the Chicago Gay Men's Chorus. It may just be about the gayest thing I've ever done, but I'm actually pretty excited about it.

I had entertained the idea of joining up with the gay men's chorus in Cincinnati, but something always held me back. Either I was suffering from low self-esteem, or possibly suffering from an additional 20 pounds on my belly, or possibly suffering through retail management hell… whatever it was, there was always an excuse.

When I moved to Chicago though, I actively pursued the idea. I had moved at the wrong time of year and auditions weren't happening for a few months, so I waited. When audition time rolled around, the guy I was dating at the time made some disparaging remarks about the chorus so I made the decision to hold off for a while. Later, when I found out that the it he that was an ass and not everyone else, I set my mind to joining up with the chorus again, but by this point it would be another few months before auditions.

The next time auditions rolled around I and I didn't go. Totally my fault that time. My (now) fiancé and I had just met and I just didn't have my eyes set on much else. But a few years have passed since then and a friend of mine from Cincinnati moved up to Chicago. This friend happened to be a part of the chorus in the Nasty 'Natti, so when he said he'd like to join Chicago's chorus I took the opportunity to join with him.

Last night was our first rehearsal. Well, mine at least. The was a rehearsal the week before but I had other obligations. So far I'm pretty excited about the chorus. I'm finally getting back to singing, even if they want me to sing Baritone, and it seems like a good group of guys. 150 guys. I'm sure there's bound to be a few I'm none too fond of, but I'm guessing I'll meet more than a few new 'mos to hang out with.

So watch out Chicago, Dickie's joined the singing gay mafia of Chicago and I'm sure we'll be belting and sashaying in a theater near you soon!
