Conservatives Attack Gay Prom

Prom was magical for me.  I graduated from a rural-ish high school in Kentucky that held some strong conservative values, but my school wasn't nearly as bad as some.  What was great about my school was that there were a few of us students that were out, and we felt very little resistance, even though a good chunk of the student body came to school after working the farms in the morning.

Although I didn't go to prom with a same sex date, I knew it would not have been an issue.  Hell, one of our opposite sex couples c ame in drag, he in a dress and she in a tux.  Classic.  Unfortunately, for many, many students across the country, my experience doesn't translate.

Here in Chicago, a group of young men and women came together to celebrate a Gay Prom and party in an open and affirming environment this past Friday.  Sounds like a wonderful idea, right?  Well, unless you're a conservative ass-hat. 

The Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, aka "straight" people that spend more time on gay sites than us gays do, decided that this event was just pure evil.  Why?  Well, putting aside all the normal BS these types of pricks use, they were particularly perturbed by the fact that Steamworks was sponsoring the event.  What's more, the hosts had the nerve to invite adults to be present.  How dare they!

Look, Steamworks, for whatever seediness may be occur there, is an extremely community conscious organization that focuses on safety and consent above all.  What's more, attacking the event because adults will be present is plain asinine!  Show me a high school sponsored Prom without adults.  Go ahead, take your time.

The thing here is that they are trying to use the old standard that all Homosexuals are sexually predatory beasts, lurking in corners just waiting for the opportunity to strike out at the nearest "boy," while trying to insinuate that heterosexuals never inflict harm on children.  Good job there, ass-hats.  But just because you point to a blue wall and call it red doesn't mean I'm going to believe it.
