A Bay Area elementary school got caught in the crossfire of a ballot initiative seeking to outlaw same-sex marriage in California on Tuesday after a kindergarten teacher asked her pupils to sign pledge cards promising not to use anti-gay slurs.
ProtectMarriage.com, the coalition of social and religious conservative groups sponsoring Proposition 8, offered the episode at Faith Ringgold Elementary School in Hayward as proof for its claim that the measure is needed to prevent public schools from discussing gay unions with students.
"Since the words 'between a man and a woman' have been taken out of the California laws, it has created a can opener for gay activists to take this kind of curriculum into our elementary schools—not 9th grade, not 12th grade, but kindergarten," said campaign spokeswoman Sonya Eddings Brown.
Produced by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, the cards were given to the children as part of Faith Ringgold elementary's commemoration of National Ally Week, an event sponsored by the network and designed to discourage harassment of gay teenagers.
"I am taking a stand for a safe and harassment-free school for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression," read the pledges. "As an ally, I pledge to not use anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) language or slurs."
Basically, a teacher asked her students to sign an equality pledge card, saying they wouldn't use anti-gay slurs any more. And the Scare Bears are trying to use this as fodder for why Marriage rights should be stripped away from gay people in California. Fucking shameful.
Joe over at Joe.My.God. exclaimed, as many others have, that the teacher should have waited a week to do this, essentially saying that the move was too controversial and if they had waited one week, the right wing would not be able to use it as fodder. I hate to tell you Joe, but that's just not the case. It doesn't matter when or where this happens, the Scare Bears will use it as fodder, because they are mindless freaks without an ounce of decency left within them.
The reality is that the teacher should have done this. There was absolutely nothing wrong with asking the children to not call each other "fags" anymore. In fact, that is one of the most uplifting stories I've seen in a very long time. You want to know why? Because it is a fact that children, as young as kindergarten, are running around using that language. They are calling each fags and queers all day long, unchecked. Mom and dad encourage it, teacher and principal don't discourage it. There is a constant positive feedback cycle for the child to continue to use the atrocious, hurtful language with absolutely ZERO negative feedback.
These Scare Bears would prefer that we not encourage openness and acceptance, because then they can no longer hide their intolerance. They don't want their children to learn that it's OK to be a gay person in this world. Hell, they've had to come to terms with the idea that it's OK to be black or Latino, they simply can't deal with the idea that people could be happy and satisfied being gay, and that person would prefer not to be harassed about being who they are being a fucking 5-year old who's parents don’t have the common decency to teach the child any form of acceptable social behavior!
No, she should not have waited. In fact, I encourage every single school teacher in the country to do this with their class tomorrow morning. I would also encourage those teachers to do a similar pledge against intolerance and bigotry and hate. It has become increasingly obvious that parents do not want to teach their kids how to love, which I might add is the real reason more than 50% of marriages fail, and if the damned parents choose not to do so, then it is up to our schools to do it for them.
So, yet again, fuck you Yes on 8. Your ignorance and intolerance is showing itself in full techno-color now. I hope you can live with the blood of all the kids who grow up tortured by their peers because they were never taught it was OK to be who they are, who can't take this life anymore because their parents can't show an ounce of love to them. You have gone too far in criticizing this teacher. You have taken the mantle of hate and replaced it with the mantle of torture, and I hope you enjoy it, because it's not going to last for long.
We are not going to sick back and allow your hurtful, angry tirade continue. Us "fags" and "queers" will have the justice and piece that is coming to us, and you will only have the knowledge that you have ended countless lives with your hatred.
